Close-Up Magic Symposium

British Close Up Magic Symposium

British Close Up Magic Symposium

I reckon in this time of credit crunch, e-books may well be the way forward (though I will always prefer the real deal…).

Anyway, our friends at Trickshop.com have just released The British Close Up Magic Symposium
– a big e-book of over 300 pages covering 16 years of the British Close Up Magic Symposium.  Loads of great card and close up magic by all the greats.  Well worth a look at $49.95 and instand delivery!

Magic by Michael Paul

Flicker - By Michael Paul - INSTANT DOWNLOAD

I got an email about a new trick called ‘Flickr‘ today and it certainly looks like an interesting concept. Involves flash paper, so may not be for everyone, but could be worth a look. An instant download for £11.99.

IMPACT - Michael Paul DVD

But as I was investigating, I discovered his earlier DVD – IMPACTat half price. This got an excellent review at Visions and also at TalkMagic so at £11.74 I’m quite tempted…

The beautiful card magic of Guy Hollingworth

The man is a bit of a legend to my mind, and his Drawing Room Deceptions is a book I treasure, even if most of the material is too hard for me! He recently did an interesting piece on the BBC about copyright in magic and the article includes two nice videos of him performing, including the infamous ‘Reparation’ – check it out at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7722521.stm.

(Thanks to MagicWeek for the heads up on this)

Royal Road to Card Magic

We’re thinking of creating a new section for beginners on here with recommendations for materials to get you started in card magic. If we do so, we’re sure to include the Royal Road to Card Magic – one of the classic texts on the subject. We’ve just hear that this is currently on special offer at Trickshop.com – Royal Road for $3.95 – a real bargain especially with the strong pound!

End of Line Bargains!

Our friends at Merchant of Magic have got some amazing reductions in their specials section. There’s some good card and non-card magic available. Just follow this link, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the ‘Specials’ link and you will find loads of goodies at up to 60% off. If you use the code ‘aprilmadness‘ before the end of the month in the discount box and you’ll get an extra 10% off your order cost!

4 Card Tricks

The boys at Big Blind Media seem to be producing new DVDs every few weeks at the moment. We’ve just had advanced notice of their new DVD 4×4 – there’s a teaser trailer with a competition on it.

It looks like it could be useful for all card magic fans – 8 different ways of producing 4 of a kind, some false cuts etc.

Dave Forrest is doing the teaching, and as we’ve commented before, we’re a big fan of his work. Should be well worth a look.

Free Card Control and Forcing e-book

I noticed the other day that Trickshop.com are offering a FREE pdf download of Basic Card Control and Forcing.

If you’ve been doing card magic for a while there is probably not much new, but includes several controls and a couple of shuffles and forces.

As with all their products, the text and photos are clear. With the strength of the pound against the dollar at the moment, I would strongly recommend having a look at some of their range – there are some very useful routines and reference works at excellent prices.

Card Magic Videos

You may already have discovered the Watching Magic site, but if not it is well worth a look. The current entries have some nice card work including Michael Vincent performing ‘The Open Travellers’ – a real treat!

In Praise of Shigeo Takagi

Amazing Miracles Of Shigeo Takagi - Book

This is simply one of the best magic books I have ever read and Richard Kaufman has done us all a huge favour by reprinting it recently.

Takagi’s magic is well thought out and beautiful. For the card worker there are a number of approaches to the ‘Triumph’ plot, an excellent alternative handling of the ‘Wild Card’ and an effortless ‘Spectator Cuts the Aces’ routine. But there is so much more than this – including coin work, silk and rope work, linking rings etc. etc. (you can read detailed table of contents with some comments here)

An old-school classic, but with much to enjoy!

Bicycle Card Case to Badge!

This is a new one on me – a twist on the shrinking card case, but ending up with a badge you can wear. Could be a good opener if it is as good as it looks in the video!
