On the Mark – a mini review

Mark Elsdon is well known for coming up with straight forward and powerful mental effects. Regular readers will know of my slight obsession with ‘named card in wallet’ effects (second only to – and in some strange ways parallel to my obsession with ACAAN effects!) – and I have used and enjoyed a good number over the years – from the venerable and devious Kolossal Killer (and its wonderful variation Heirloom) to Marc Oberon’s ’somewhat blunt’ but nonetheless effective Bang On. But in On the Mark I think I have found a new favourite.

On the Mark - by Mark Elsdon
The plot, of course, is familiar – the spectator names the only card in an envelope in your wallet. Presentational possibilities are various – but the suggested one works well. No real surprises here.

And the same could be said of method. You are not buying a radically new idea here. If you have been in magic any time at all you will likely be familiar with the various elements of the method. However, they work really well together! There is some good thinking here, and some subtleties which, in my mind at least, make this a stronger effect for the spectator than some of the alternatives. The method is straightforward, which means you can concentrate on selling it – which is the way I like it! I am fully expecting to put this into my ‘working routine’.

A word on the supplied props. The wallet supplied is of a good quality and will readily slip into use as an every day wallet. You don’t have to use this wallet – but it works well for the requirements. Can’t say more than that. The envelopes are fine – and could be replaced if you preferred a different colour. I was a little disappointed with the quality of the cards – but not to such an extent that it would put me off using them.

The bottom line is I think this is a great little effect. If you like strong card magic with a mental leaning grab it’s time to get On the Mark now!

Trick of the Month – May 2009

Holy Grail of Mentalism - INSTANT DOWNLOAD Any Card at Any Number (ACAAN) is a plot I am slightly obsessed with! So I was delighted to discover this new instant download (55page) with a very strong version of this effect and several variations and extras. Well worth a look at £19.99
WoW Wallet The classic Koran prediction is given a different twist by the talented Stephen Tucker. You deal through the cards and stop where the spectator says (no force). A duplicate of their chosen card is in the specially produced leather wallet. Currently on special at only £8.05
White Star - By Jim Critchlow This is as clever (and atmospheric) a version of a ‘living and dead’ test as you’ll ever find. All themed around the Titanic. Comes with nicely produced cards, but the principle can be extended to different themes and presentations. A great effect. £29.99.

Trick of the Month – April 2009

Twister Continuum - By Stephen Tucker As a fan of both Stephen Tucker and the BBM DVDs, when I saw this was reduced I had to mention it. Lots of clever tricks possible with a custom Bicycle gimmick. 2 extra routines included on the DVD also. Bargain at only £11.50
The Dragon There’s quite a bit of noise about this new magical accessory. Enables you to vanish small items and simultaneously produce a loud bang! Only £26.99
Foresight - By Devin Knight If you read this site regularly you will know I love strong mental magic and especially clean ‘think of a card’ or ACAAN effects. It looks like Devin Knight has come up with a clever and funny variation on this theme. £22.99.

Trick of the Month – May 2008

Card at Any Number (Impromptu) by Barrie Richardson For me this is a new all time favourite I think. This is a really practical solution to the card at any number plot which can be done with any (borrowed) deck and no preparation. There are a couple of moves which are within reach of anyone with any basic card skills, and as with all Barrie’s stuff it is routined to perfection! Highly recommended. £14.99
Magic Of Mark Leveridge Vol 3 (General Magic) Mark Leveridge always produces commercial magic, and this DVD includes 9 of his routines. I am particularly highlighting it this month because it is on special at the moment at only £12.34.
WD40 By Wayne Dobson I’m reading this at the moment and enjoying it very much. Firstly you have Wayne’s autobiographgy which is a really interesting read in itself. Find out how he reached the success he has done and also how he has battled with MS. And as if that was not enough, it includes 40 of his routines (hence WD40) which are always practical and straightforward. If you have any of the Dobson’s Choice booklets there is quite a bit of overlap, but some new ideas too. A great book. £25.99.

Trick of the Month – Apr 2008

Neat and Tidy - Rubber Bands - By Wayne Fox I love tricks with Rubber Bands, because they are such an everyday item. You still have to go a long way to beat the original ‘Crazy-Man’s Handcuffs’ routine. But this new idea from Wayne Fox seems like the ‘logical’ climax to a rubber band act – great cisual magic as a pile of rubber bands visually turn into a rubber band ball. £24.99
No Card Tricks - Jay Sankey Continuing the theme of non-card magic, here is a DVD from Jay Sankey which is on SPECIAL at the moment – reduced from £19.99 to only £7.05! Full of magic with coins and matches etc. Well worth a look.
Pocket Space - by Tony Miller I think I’ve said before that I’m fascinated with the Any Card at Any Number plot. This is a different take on that idea which eliminates all the dealing out of cards and takes up almost no space in your pocket as the ‘deck’ is printed on a business card in your pocket. (there’s a very positive review on TM) £17.99.

A wonderful Any Card at Any Number

There are a large number of magic blogs out there on the InterWeb, but I only recently stumbled across this excellent site by David Britland. David is a well-known card magician in the UK and he very generously makes some of his excellent ideas available here publicly.

Here is a link to a very powerful ACAAN plot with a number of clever subtleties built in. Highly recommended reading…
